Common Foot and Ankle Conditions
- Achilles tendonitis – Tendonitis can develop in tendons across the body, but the Achilles tendon is particularly prone to inflammation because of its heavy workload. This tendon at the back of the ankle can become strained when an individual begins a new activity or workout regimen, intensify physical activity or injure the area. Achilles tendonitis typically causes heel or leg pain during or after physical activity.
- Ankle pain – Ankle pain can develop for a wide range of reasons, and a podiatrist will be able to determine the underlying cause and create a treatment plan. Pain in the ankle can stem from tendonitis, bursitis, broken bones, fractures, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, sprains and other conditions.
- Athlete’s Foot – Also known as tinea pedis, athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that takes hold in the skin between the toes. It typically spreads through gym floors, shared towels and clothes. Athlete’s foot can be persistent and professional treatment (plus some changes to habits) will help prevent it from returning.
- Bunions – Bunions are bony formations at the base of the toes. They most often develop on the outside of the big toes, but can also develop on the little toes. Both surgical and nonsurgical options for bunions are available, depending on the severity.
- Foot pain – Because the foot is composed of a complex network of structures, it’s common that one becomes inflamed or doesn’t function properly. Dr. Tanwir’s knowledge of the foot allows her to diagnose the issue and develop a treatment plan consistent with your unique needs.
- Fungail nail – Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is caused by a fungal infection of the nail bed. If left untreated, it can lead the toenail to change appearance and/or crumble, and can also spread to the skin to cause athlete’s foot.
- Hammertoe – This joint deformity is characterized by an abnormal bend in the middle toe joint. Hammertoe can make it difficult to walk normally and cause pain in footwear.
- Ingrown toenails – When the toenails grow into the skin, an ingrown toenail forms. This can lead to infection and pain. If you experience recurring ingrown toenails, Dr. Tanwir can provide professional assistance to better control nail growth.
- Plantar Fasciitis – This heel pain typically feels like a stabbing sensation at the bottom of the foot, below the heel. Inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament leads to microtears, which cause discomfort.
- Plantar Warts – Plantar warts are caused by a strain of the Human Papillomavirus taking hold in the skin of the feet. Warts can become uncomfortable, especially if they’re on the bottom of the feet or between toes.
- Sprains – Sprains occur when ligaments are overused or torn, during increased activity or due to an injury. The ankle commonly becomes sprained because it has a wide range of rotation and bears the body’s weight.
- Ulcers and other wounds – Wounds on the feet or ankles can lead to serious infections, especially is the patient is diabetic. Any non-healing or chronic wound merits professional attention right away.
